Why contour marking saves lives and money

How retro-reflective conspicuity marking supports recognition of heavy vehicles in darkness, without unsupported accident claims.

Conspicuity marking is a passive visibility measure. It does not produce light; it returns incident headlamp light towards its source. This can help a driver recognise the size and orientation of a heavy vehicle in darkness.

Visibility requires a complete installation

Performance depends on approved material, correct placement, a recognisable contour and a clean, undamaged condition. One reflective strip in an arbitrary position does not communicate the same information as a correctly marked side or rear.

No universal accident percentage

Road-safety studies differ by country, period, vehicle population and method. We therefore do not quote a universal reduction figure without the original study and its context. For a fleet, visibility, damage history, repair cost and inspection readiness are more controllable measures.

One part of a wider safety system

Conspicuity marking complements lamps, reflectors, maintenance and safe driving. It replaces none of them. Routine checks for contamination, damage and lifted edges help preserve its intended function.

What conspicuity marking demonstrably does

Retro-reflective material returns headlamp light towards its source. A correctly installed contour therefore helps a driver recognise the presence, width and length of a heavy vehicle in darkness. That is the functional safety purpose behind the rules.

A universal accident-reduction percentage without a study area, vehicle type and conditions would be misleading. Assess fleet value through visibility, damage history, downtime and inspection readiness. Marking supports perception; it does not replace lighting, maintenance or safe driving.
