1Full contour marking
Outlines the complete shape of the vehicle with a continuous line. Required at the rear when wider than 2,100 mm. Provides the highest level of recognition of the vehicle's full extent.
2Partial contour marking
Marks the horizontal dimension continuously and indicates the upper corners. On the side when longer than 6,000 mm. Sufficient to meet the legal minimum requirement.
3Line marking
A single continuous line for length or width, used where the body shape does not allow contour marking. Explicitly permitted on tankers, low loaders and other special bodies.
White or yellow
Permitted on the sides of the vehicle. Yellow is frequently chosen for a uniform appearance across the entire vehicle.
Red or yellow
Permitted on the rear of the vehicle. Red provides the strongest warning effect when approached from behind.
No white at rear
White is not permitted at the rear. The wrong colour is not compliant and can result in inspection failure.
The choice between full, partial or line marking is driven purely by the vehicle's dimensions and body shape. Full contour marking gives the best recognition of the vehicle's overall size, which can be critical at night and in poor visibility.
For special vehicles such as tankers, car transporters or low loaders, line marking is explicitly allowed because a continuous contour line is not structurally feasible. In those cases always use approved line marking of the same class with a visible E-mark.
Choose the form that makes the vehicle clearest
The best marking is the one that makes the vehicle shape immediately readable at night, in rain and around busy yards.
Full contour
Use when the rear or side can be followed as a clear rectangle and maximum recognition is desired.
Partial contour
Strong for long trailers: the horizontal line and upper corners make length and width easy to read.
Line marking
Suitable for curves, open structures or low loading heights where a full contour would not make sense.
