When is conspicuity marking mandatory?
The requirement depends on vehicle category, weight and dimensions. For vehicles that must be marked, the size determines which marking is needed. Requirements stem from ECE R150 for the product and ECE R48 for installation; both are harmonised across Europe, but enforcement is handled through national inspection regimes.
Tractor units and cabs are generally outside the requirement but may be marked voluntarily. Where the shape rules out contour marking, for example on tankers or low loaders, a line marking is accepted instead. Responsibility lies with the bodybuilder or fleet operator depending on new build or modification.
The marking obligation applies to both new and existing vehicles once they meet the weight or dimension criteria. During rebuilds, repairs or curtain/panel replacement the marking must be restored or supplemented to meet the legal minimum.
For cross-border operations it pays to always meet the strictest national standard. This avoids surprises during foreign roadside checks or border inspections. The cost of a full set of approved tape is negligible compared to one failed vehicle or a fine.
How to determine the requirement per vehicle
Start with the vehicle, not the roll of tape. Category, mass, length, width and body shape together determine whether marking is required.
Vehicle category
Check first whether the vehicle falls under N2/N3 or O3/O4. That is the basis for the obligation.
Dimensions
Measure the actual body. Trailers, semi-trailers and box bodies often reach the thresholds quickly.
Exceptions
On tankers, low loaders and special bodies, line marking can be allowed when a contour does not fit the structure.
