Applying contour marking tape: step by step

Approved tape only holds if it is applied correctly. Most problems with lifting or bubbling tape come not from the material but from the preparation. Here is the method.

1. Clean and degrease

Remove dirt, grease, wax and old adhesive residue. Use a suitable cleaner and let the surface dry fully. Tape does not bond to a dirty or greasy surface.

2. Keep the right temperature

The adhesive needs a minimum application temperature. Too cold and the bond will not start. Work within the manufacturer's range, ideally in a heated space in cold weather.

3. Apply dry and straight

Measure and mark the line first so the marking runs straight and continuous.
Press the tape from the centre out to the edges to drive out air.
On curved surfaces use segmented or flexible tape.

Do not work in the rain or on a wet surface. Moisture under the tape is the most common cause of lifting in the first season.

4. Check the E mark

Make sure the approval mark stays visible on the strip after application, so the marking is provably compliant at inspection.

5. Maintenance

Clean the marking along with regular washing. Replace damaged or lifted sections in good time with the same approved tape.

Turn installation into a recorded process

Record at least the product, batch, surface, surface temperature, cleaning method and installation date. Minimum application temperature and post-treatment are product-specific. Use the current manufacturer's data sheet rather than one generic value from the internet.

Inspect alignment, edges, joints and visible product identification at handover. On critical surfaces, schedule a follow-up after the adhesive has built strength for the period stated by the manufacturer.
