What is R150

The UN regulation ECE R150 that defines colour, reflective class and the mandatory E-mark for conspicuity tape. The legal and technical foundation for compliant marking on heavy goods vehicles.

The basics

ECE R150 is the UN regulation for the approval of retro-reflective devices and markings on motor vehicles and trailers. It consolidates several older standards, including R3, R27, R69, R70 and the well-known R104, into one framework. The E approval mark on the tape proves it was tested to R150 and meets the requirements for colour, reflectivity, width and durability.

ECE R150

The product

Defines colour, reflectivity, durability and the approval mark. It answers: is this tape approved?

ECE R104

The old standard

The earlier marking standard you still see referenced. Its requirements now sit inside R150.

ECE R48

The installation

Defines where the marking goes, at what height and how corners are handled. It answers: where does it belong?

The regulation has been firmly embedded in EU law since 2021 and is gradually replacing the old separate type approvals. For importers, bodybuilders and fleet operators this means only tape with a demonstrable E-mark and Class C meets the legal requirements. Cheaper reflective tapes without this certification will fail inspection even if they look similar.

What does ECE R150 specifically define?

  • Minimum reflectivity values for Class C at both short and long range, including when wet.
  • Precise colour coordinates so white, yellow and red remain recognisable and consistent in all conditions.
  • The E-mark must be repeated at intervals so every cut piece carries verifiable certification.
  • Durability requirements: resistant to wash plants, chemicals, UV, moisture and temperature swings throughout the vehicle's service life.

Together with the installation rules in ECE R48, R150 forms the complete harmonised framework for compliant and effective conspicuity marking on heavy vehicles across Europe.

Practical use

From regulation text to daily operation

ECE R150 becomes useful when purchasing, installation and inspection are handled together. Treat it as part of a complete vehicle compliance check.

For purchasing

Record Class C, repeated E approval marks and suitability for the surface you are applying to.

For installation

Always check ECE R48 alongside R150. R150 approves the material; R48 determines placement.

For fleet control

Keep data sheets and approval information per tape type so workshops and inspectors can verify quickly.

Quick check

  • E mark visible on every usable tape section
  • Class C for conspicuity marking
  • 50 to 60 mm width
  • Correct colour per vehicle side
  • Placement according to R48

Need R150-ready tape with proof? Choose material with a visible E mark, Class C reflectivity and the right width for your vehicle or body.
