The core rules of ECE R150 are stable, but technology and requirements continue to evolve. New materials, smart applications and possible stricter standards will influence fleets in the coming years.
New materials and tapes
Better and better Class C tapes with longer service life, improved adhesion on difficult surfaces and greater flexibility are coming to market. Segmentation is also being further optimised for curtain-sided trailers and special bodies.
Integration with other systems
Future developments focus on combination with camera and sensor systems, active lighting or even luminous elements that stand out more at night. Passive reflection remains the foundation however.
Possible standard updates
The UN and EU regularly evaluate effectiveness. Stricter rules may come on minimum reflectivity values, broader application to lighter vehicles or tougher requirements on durability and environmental impact of the materials.
Stay informed through your supplier and inspection authority. Investing in current approved Class C tape remains in most cases the best and future-proof choice.
Track adopted amendments, not predictions
UN regulations are maintained through amendment series, amendments and corrigenda. The relevant question is which version applies to type approval, registration and national inspection. An announced technology or prototype is not a new legal requirement.
Keep the approval information for installed material and check current R150 and R48 documents when replacing it. A later amendment does not automatically invalidate an earlier lawfully granted approval; transition provisions determine how series coexist.
