The 5 biggest mistakes with contour marking (and how to avoid them)

An approved roll of tape is no guarantee of an approved result. Most rejections and lifting markings are caused by errors during preparation and application. Here are the most common ones with the fix.

1. Insufficient cleaning

The surface must be free of grease, wax and dirt. Many fitters skip degreasing or use only water. Result: the adhesive does not bond and the tape lifts within months.

2. Wrong temperature

Too cold and the adhesive does not activate properly. Too warm and the tape shrinks or forms bubbles. Stick to the manufacturer's stated application temperature, within the product-specific range.

3. Non-continuous lines

The marking must follow the contour of the vehicle. Large breaks or unmarked corners make the marking less effective and can lead to comments or failure.

4. Wrong colour or class

White at the rear, class B instead of C, or too narrow strip: it may seem minor, but it is non-compliant and leads to rejection or fines.

5. No maintenance or replacement

Damaged or dirty marking often stays in place until the next inspection. Regular cleaning and timely replacement of loose sections prevents bigger problems.

Audit the product and the vehicle separately

A sound workshop check has two columns. The first covers product class, approval, colour, width and suitability for the surface. The second covers position, coverage, corners, interruptions and vehicle application under R48. Both columns must be correct.

Avoid generic temperature claims. The controlling figures are the product specification and measured surface temperature, not only the workshop air temperature.
